LA's new Tom Bradley International terminal explores the concept of the 'edge'
Each unique area within Tom Bradley International Terminal highlights a component of the “edge” concept: boundaries, transition spaces, inhabiting, watching, enclosure, exposure. At the new Great Hall in Bradley West, this experience occurs at the edge of the west-facing glass facade, where travelers and greeters meet; outside, along the new linear retail courts, there is the background activity of the planes and tarmac; inside it’s the buzz of people. Large portals in the wood ceiling plane extend down or expand upward, framing spaces and opening up views. Throughout, transparency increases engagement with the retail and guest experiences: the design’s ample porosity allows travelers to flow in and out of the new world-class lounging, shopping, and dining spaces. The Great Hall retail design is inspired by the modern and international sophistication of Rodeo Drive. The shops’ planning, programming, and adjacencies target maximum passenger flow and interaction. As Design Architects alongside Executive Architects HOK, Montalba Architects has created a public space that reflects the distinctive and varied culture of Los Angeles.
